The disposal of sodium after WWII



The reaction looks like this:

2Na(solid) + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2(gas)

In other words, the sodium turns into sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas, and the reaction gives off a LOT of heat. That heat boils water and can also ignite the hydrogen.
